Billings man dies following snowboarding accident

A man from Billings who crashed while snowboarding on Beartooth Pass last week died Tuesday at St. Vincent Healthcare. Justin Schlueter was trying to snowboard down the steep icy mountain Wednesday afternoon.

Jon Trapp with Carbon County Search and Rescue says Schlueter went into a boulder field and tumbled down through the rocks as he tried to snowboard down the steep, icy mountainside. Trapp says search and rescue from Carbon County and Park County Wyoming, along with Red Lodge Emergency Services, got to Schlueter easily, but the terrain forced Help Flight to land about 400 yards away.

"We had to transport the patient down over snow and rocks and litter. That was a challenge. But we did it quickly and safely, and there was a good chance he had brain swelling which needed immediate surgery."

A fund has been has been set up for Justin's family at Billings Federal Credit Union. If you would like to help, send donations care of Justin Schlueter to: P.O. Box 1779, Billings, MT 59103.

Mary and I along with Laura and Brock from Texas, were on the mountain and at that spot that day. We were asked to go for help by a friend of the deceased who had made his way to the top of the hill.  We traveled 15 miles to the nearest mountain trading post and reported the accident.  It must have been two hours before we spotted the first search and rescue vehicle making its way up the mountain.  There was little snow on the hillside and it was very icy.

What a way to go.
